One of my favourite authors is Terry Pratchett. He has written several books that I love for their bent view of the world and the multiple laugh out loud moments. He wrote a series of books for children called the Wee Free Men, part of but not a part of his Disk World books. A few years ago, I read the first three books of the series to the computer and then burned them onto CDs for my kids to listen to while we were doing car trips (I rather have them listening to something and looking out the window, than watching a DVD and missing the scenery, even if the scenery is dull). When we listened to the books while we were traveling this time we got to enjoy the stories again, but we also experienced a bit of a time capsule. When I recorded the stories I was not in a sound proof booth. I was in our dining room and life of the time was happening around me. Children squealing, phones ringing, timers going off, television in the background, the sound of my dog’s, Molly (who died in the late summer of that year), toenails clattering on the floor as she wandered by, and little voices asking me questions when I was in mid-sentence. So in and amongst listening to the story my kids commented on the sounds and reacted to hearing their voices in the background, as well as laughing at my mispronunciations and other verbal fumbles. We were captured in a moment of auditory time travel, which was a pretty cool thing to experience.
