When I first saw needle felting I pictured it being stockings. Around the same time I went to an art show that had on display watercolours (I think) that were from India. There was a card explaining that paintings, like the ones being shown, were not on constant display. They were brought out and shown around for important guests. That idea stuck with me. When I hang art on the wall, no matter how much I love it, it becomes part of the background. The idea of bringing the stockings out for Christmas, enjoying them for a short time, and putting them away to revisit again the next year really appeals to me. Although, I think these could be hung year around.
The body of the stocking is made from either sheep’s wool felt, a sheep’s wool and alpaca blend, or felted recommissioned wool blanket. The felt is about 1/4″ thick. The image is needle felted on using sheep’s wool or sheep and alpaca blend roving. The pieces of the stocking are blanket stitched together with sheep’s wool yarn. The stocking has a cotton fabric lining. The approximate finished dimensions are 12″ x 18″. There is a piece of cedar inside for storage.
Each stocking is one of a kind.
