Blue streak
I have said for many years that when my hair goes silver I will dye bright colour streaks into it. Definitely not rushing things, but I think I will be in my late 70’s before my hair is silver enough to dye. So, why wait. I now have a lovely, discrete stripe of blue in…
A casual bear
We’ve been camping. We tried out a new to us provincial park, travelling a little further north than we have been in the past, to Grundy Lake Provincial Park. It is lovely. The campsites are wooded. The ground is sandy, which means there is sand everywhere, feet, dogs, floor, bedding, dogs, towels, dogs. The facilities…
Empty praise
One thing that used to drive me a little squirrelly when the kids were wee was other parents praising and rewarding their children for things the children needed to do. “Yay! Good eating!”, “You get to have this candy for such a good pee!”, ” Good job putting your snowsuit on so we can go…
Wayhome
Back home. Unpacked. Kids, dogs, and husband have all recovered from missing me. Only two days back and the adventure seems so long ago… Two hours before I was to leave, I discovered that some of my necessary technology wasn’t cooperating. Panic, anxiety, some stomping and swearing, and a couple of fumbling phone calls to…
Going on a Lion Hunt
Well, not really, but I am going on an adventure. I decided to try something new. I am going to be volunteering at a multi-day music festival, at which I will be doing my first solo camping adventure in our green van. Two new things in one go. I am pretty excited/anxious. Is there a…
The phone
I do not like phones. Phones are for emergencies, for making dates, appointments or reservations, keeping in touch with people that live far far away, and ordering pizza (which I get someone else to do). A usual conservation with me on the phone will go, “Hi. Do you have time? Great I’ll meet you in…
Raspberry thief
Raspberries are densely flavoured little packets of yumminess. I have some growing along the fence. They appeared a few years ago (or possibly ten), volunteers from my compost. Raspberries are pretty determined to exist. The raspberries in my garden have a challenging life. My golden retriever loves them. In the winter she chews the canes…
Curse the glass touchers
When it gets a little slow at the restaurant I work at (and from this point onward will be refered to as ‘my restaurant’), I will tidy, straighten, and dust. Not activities I am inclined to do at home because there are so many other, better things to do. One thing I would next to…
My Garden
I am not a gardener. I love my garden, but if what I have planted can’t survive my lack of attention it wasn’t meant to be in my garden. Hardy plants, deep roots, good water absorbsion and retention, theoretically self sustaining, until too many +30C days and no rain. My poor garden was very sad….
Poppies, more poppies, and milkweed
I love poppies (I think I might have mentioned that once, possibly twice…). Their spiky leaves and stems, delicate petals, the seed pods with their funky little tops. These cheery little non-natives dance, nod, and peak out from the chaotic foliage of the rest of my naturally evolving garden. (addendum: I realized in the original…
