I have been looking for work, which is something I find very challenging. The marketing of my abilities, saying the right thing, presenting the right image, showing the right amount of enthusiasm. I hate the dryness of making a resume and trying to put into words my experiences and why someone should bother hiring me. The thing I find most challenging is the cover letter (oh, and the interview…argh). Writing something brief yet interesting, something inspired to encourage the potential employer to look beyond the words on the paper. I just want a job. This is my imagined cover letter…
Dear Potential Employer,
I want a job.
My chosen career is parenting and I would like to find a job that would support my career. I would like to work in a space that I can build relationships with the people I work with and for. A place where I can learn new things, push my perceived boundaries, and believe in the place I am representing. In return I offer honesty, loyalty, hard work, creative thought, punctuality, and commitment, and occasionally baked goods. I will always try my best because I know that I am representing myself as well as my employer.
Thank you for your time,
Sincerely,
Deani Sweet
Hired! In truth, I think that would actually make a great cover letter. Those skills and attitudes are not easy to come by, so highlighting them in a way that actually reflect those skills and attitudes makes it perfect! Go for it!
Well, I gave it a go. I’ll see if I get a call back.
