‘Why’ is one of mine and my kids favourite words. ‘Why’ has lead us on many interesting and ridiculous journeys. One of our most resent ‘why’ was why don’t we greet people like we greet dogs? So we decided to greet each other like we greet our dogs. Face, ear, head rubs, silly voices and nonsense statements certainly made meeting up more entertaining. Face and head rubbing lead to the occasional eye poke and ears snag, so we deemed that as a fairly perilous venture. Keeping a straight face while someone is rubbing your head asking ‘whose my good wee girl?’ with that weird scoochy duck face so many people get when talking to pets and babies, was nigh on impossible. What snagged our attention was the hug greeting with back rubbing and scratching. Those greetings certainly took longer than the one-armed, over the shoulder, short back patting of the usual ‘glad to see you’ hug. It seemed necessary to revisit and retest that aspect of the experiment multiple times to confirm our findings. I think we might need to expand our test group.
