My dog is either magical or has a grasp of the universe far above us mere mortals.
She seems to be able to adjust her mass.
When she has settled on the bed, be it before I have crawled in or when I have not yet gotten up, she becomes immovable. Blankets cannot be pulled from underneath her, attempts to nudge her over are futile, and the closer she is to the middle of the bed and the more space she takes up the heavier she gets. I do not know if all dogs possess this ability. My previous dogs would leap up when I would shove my feet under them and leave in a disgruntled huff. Except for one, he would growl in a way that made grown men concede defeat and go and sleep somewhere else. Not Hazel. I can shove my feet under her, move, wiggle, yank, shove, all to my hearts desire and she just pulls more mass from some other dimension, looks at me with questioning eyebrows and sighs. This phenomenon is not limited to bed possession. It is also engaged when, with hopeful eyebrows and head in your lap, she wills you to share your meal with her. As her head is resting in your lap it gets heavier. There is a gradual increase of weight to make sure you remain aware of her eyebrow communications. Where she keeps the excess mass when not needed is a mystery. Every time I have weighed her or rescued her from a precarious perch (she likes climbing onto the piano bench) she maintains a slender less than sixty pounds. Try to shove her off the bed, reclaim a comfy seat, or get her into the back of the van (she does not like vehicular travel), it would be easier to move a sleeping linebacker. I have multiple theories about where her additional mass is stored, from magical to fantastical to science fiction, but seeing as I have yet to decipher any but the most rudimentary eyebrow communication I will probably never know the truth…
