I am sitting on my backyard swing enjoying the fading warmth of the day. The kids are inside being entertained by various media devices. I am being entertained by the dogs. I think I got the best of the possibilities. In the last half hour I have watched some all-star wrestling, tug of war, stealth and strategy manovering, epic battles, hurdle running. The puppy, Olive, initiated some run-by stealth biting attacks, which my big dog, Hazel, didn’t seem too sure what to do with. It took her a couple of moments to decide that a body block was the best way to deal with a charging, biting puppy. Puppies are very resilient. After a traumatic barrel roll Olive bounced back and pounced on Hazel. Tenacious could also be used to describe the puppy. This entertainment requires audience participation as well: to turn down the volume of barking dogs; to keep a stealth Olive out of my raspberry canes; to keep rolling, wrestling dog bodies from taking out my potted tomatoes; to stop escaping dogs from running through my vegetable patch; to make sure Hazel doesn’t sit on Olive’s head. It is like a silent film, no dialogue is needed to understand what is going on. It is funny, dramatic, exciting, and sweet. The accompanying sound track is the distant hiss of traffic, trills, whistles and clicks of bird song, and the various sounds of my neighborhood. When the dogs get weary I can switch my attention to the intrepid, bird feeder invading, leaping chipmunk. Some of the best entertainment around.
