I get ads in my email. I know there is probably a way to not receive them, but in the short term it is easier/faster to delete them. Not being much of a shopper I really don’t care about what the ads are trying to sell me. I can very easily ignore ‘50% off on pixie pants’, ‘Last chance…’, and every other sale motivated statement. (although recently the term ‘BOGO’ gave me pause. Once it was decyphered for me, ‘buy one, get one’, it was banished to my ‘Why would you EVER use that acronym?’ list. Doesn’t everyone have one of those?) What frequently catches my eye are the models. Not because of their dazzling beauty. Not because of their stunning clothes, or their shapely form. Not because of their artfully applied make-up. What makes me pause is their utter vapidity. When did having someone looking gormless start sell products? Empty eyes, mouth hanging open, under weight, and lank hair, all that is missing is a line of drool. I am not exactly sure how that kind of image is supposed to make me want to buy something. What are these images trying to communicate to the potential consumer? Numerous thoughts are bandying about my head of what it communicates to me, none of them would make me stroll up to the door and hand over my cash.
