I think I have mentioned that time management and I have a tenuous relationship. I plan for more time than there actually is. A great example would be the projects I have embarked on recently. This page, I started in February. Then, I added planning a first time trip across an ocean for September. Tacked on to the end, I decided that we needed to finally tackle a renovation on the kids’ room (which needs to be done before I leave, according to my brain).
We have lived in our house for many years and the kids’ room has not been changed since before we moved in. We live in a house that is over 100 years old. Any changes that we have made have always turned into a bigger project than anticipated. The renovation to this room is no exception.
The room has an angled ceiling that the plaster was coming detached from. Repair and fiddle, or remove and start over? Remove. Well, since we decided to remove it then why not solve other issues; the lack of insulation in the walls, more power outlets, and lighting.
Once the plaster was removed, what should we replace it with? Wall board? I am not a big fan of mudding. We decided to do tongue and groove pine, horizontally, going for that ‘rustic cabin in the woods’ feel. The added bonus was I wouldn’t have to fiddle with plaster. Instead, I would get to play with power tools. I like power tools.
The room has come together pretty well. The biggest challenge was the fact that my lovely century old house is not square in any sense of the word. The deficit of squareness made some areas very challenging, especially where surfaces meet.
I put the final boards in place this week (much rejoicing). I am down to 29 days until I leave on my trip. There is still trimming, caulking, painting, fixture purchase and installation, and finally, moving everyone back in. Sounds do-able. I am sure I have plenty of time.
Looks good… but what a lot of work!! Wish the photos were larger, they are kinda hard to see. :)
